Vladimir Dzhanibekov is a Soviet cosmonaut who flew five spaceflights, tying him among the most experienced Soviet cosmonauts of his era in terms of number of missions. In 1985 he commanded a daring rescue mission to the Salyut 7 space station after it had gone silent and lost power, successfully docking with and reviving the tumbling, unresponsive station, an operation widely regarded as one of the most technically demanding rescues in spaceflight history. A physical phenomenon of unpredictable tumbling motion observed by Dzhanibekov aboard Salyut 7 is now named the Dzhanibekov effect.
