Umberto Guidoni is an Italian astrophysicist and science writer who earned a doctorate in astrophysics from the University of Rome La Sapienza in 1978 and worked for both the Italian Space Agency and the European Space Agency. He was selected as an astronaut in the 1989 Italian Space Agency group and the 1996 NASA Astronaut Group 16, and flew two Space Shuttle missions, STS-75 in 1996 and STS-100 in 2001, on which he became the first European aboard the International Space Station, logging almost 28 days in space. He later served as a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2009.
