Ulf Merbold is a German physicist and European Space Agency astronaut who became the first West German citizen to fly in space and the first non-American to fly aboard the Space Shuttle, serving as a payload specialist on the STS-9 mission in 1983, which carried the first Spacelab science module. He flew two additional missions later in his career, including a 1994 flight aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to the Mir space station.
