Thomas Stafford was an American NASA astronaut and United States Air Force general who flew on Gemini 6A, commanded Gemini 9A, and served as commander of Apollo 10 in 1969, a full dress rehearsal for the Moon landing that brought its lunar module to within about nine miles of the lunar surface without landing. Stafford later commanded the American side of the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, the first joint spaceflight between the United States and the Soviet Union, docking his Apollo capsule with a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft.
