Takao Doi is a Japanese astronaut and engineer, born September 18, 1954, in Tokyo, who was selected as an astronaut candidate by Japan's National Space Development Agency in 1985 and later joined NASA Astronaut Group 15 in 1994. He flew two Space Shuttle missions, STS-87 in 1997, on which he became the first Japanese astronaut to conduct a spacewalk, and STS-123 in March 2008, which delivered Japan's Kibo laboratory module and the Canadian Dextre robot to the International Space Station. He holds doctorates in aerospace engineering from the University of Tokyo and in astronomy from Rice University, and as an amateur astronomer discovered the supernovae SN 2002gw and SN 2007aa.
