Steve MacLean is a Canadian astronaut and physicist, born December 14, 1954, in Ottawa, Ontario, who holds a BS, MS and PhD in physics from York University and was chosen as one of Canada's first six astronauts in December 1983, later joining NASA Astronaut Group 16 in 1996. He flew two Space Shuttle missions, STS-52 in 1992, conducting seven CANEX-2 experiments as payload specialist, and STS-115 in September 2006, when he became the first Canadian to operate the robotic arm Canadarm2 and performed a seven-hour spacewalk, logging 21 days, 16 hours and 2 minutes in space across both flights. He later served as president of the Canadian Space Agency from 2008 to 2013 and returned to physics research in 2013 as an associate member of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo.
