Shubhanshu Shukla is a group captain in the Indian Air Force and an astronaut with the Indian Space Research Organisation, selected in 2019 for training toward the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme run by ISRO. In July 2025 he became the first Indian to visit the International Space Station, flying as part of the privately organised Axiom Mission 4, and the second Indian to travel to space after Rakesh Sharma in 1984. In 2026 he was awarded the Ashoka Chakra, the highest peacetime Indian military decoration.
