Sergei Krikalev is a Soviet and Russian cosmonaut who accumulated more time in space than anyone else at the time of his final flight, with 803 cumulative days across six missions. He became known as the last Soviet citizen after launching to the Mir space station in May 1991 on what was expected to be a standard rotation, only to find his mission repeatedly extended as the Soviet Union dissolved beneath him, and he did not return to Earth until March 1992, by which point his home country no longer existed under that name.
