Scott Carpenter was one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts and the second American to orbit the Earth, flying the Mercury-Atlas 7 mission, known as Aurora 7, in May 1962. His flight suffered a fuel and attitude control problem that caused him to overshoot his planned splashdown point by a significant distance, leaving recovery forces briefly unable to locate him. Carpenter never flew in space again after that mission, but he later worked as a Navy aquanaut in the Sealab undersea habitat program.
