Ronald Evans was an American NASA astronaut and United States Navy officer who served as command module pilot on Apollo 17 in December 1972, the final crewed mission of the Apollo program. While his crewmates Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt explored the lunar surface, Evans remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module, conducting scientific observations and photography of the Moon. During the return journey to Earth he also performed a deep-space spacewalk to retrieve film canisters from the exterior of the spacecraft.
