Robert Crippen was an American NASA astronaut and United States Navy officer who served as pilot on STS-1 in April 1981, the first-ever flight of the Space Shuttle program, alongside commander John Young. He went on to fly a total of four Shuttle missions, commanding the final three, before moving into management roles within NASA, eventually becoming director of the Kennedy Space Center.
