Richard Gordon was an American NASA astronaut and United States Navy officer who flew on Gemini 11 in 1966, performing two spacewalks, and later served as command module pilot on Apollo 12 in 1969, remaining in lunar orbit while crewmates Pete Conrad and Alan Bean walked on the Moon. Gordon had been slated for a later Apollo lunar landing mission that was ultimately cancelled amid post-Apollo 13 budget cuts, so Apollo 12 remained his only trip to the Moons vicinity.
