Reinhold Ewald is a German physicist and European Space Agency astronaut who earned a diploma in experimental physics from the University of Cologne in 1983 and a doctorate in 1986. Selected to the German astronaut team in 1990, he trained as backup for the Mir 92 mission before flying his own spaceflight in February 1997 aboard Soyuz TM-25 to the Mir space station, spending 20 days conducting biomedical and materials science experiments. He joined the European Astronaut Corps in 1999 and later directed the Flight Operations Division at the Columbus Control Centre and taught astronautics at the University of Stuttgart.
