Rakesh Sharma is an Indian Air Force pilot who became the first citizen of India to fly in space, launching aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-11 mission in April 1984 as part of the Interkosmos program, which flew astronauts from allied and partner nations aboard Soviet spacecraft. He spent about eight days in orbit aboard the Salyut 7 space station conducting scientific experiments. Sharma became a national hero in India, and his flight remains a landmark moment frequently cited in accounts of Indias spaceflight ambitions.
