Pete Conrad was an American NASA astronaut and United States Navy officer who flew on Gemini 5, commanded Gemini 11, and commanded Apollo 12 in November 1969, becoming the third person to walk on the Moon. Known for his talkative and colorful personality, Conrad joked as he stepped onto the lunar surface that it might be a small step for Neil Armstrong but a long one for him, a shorter astronaut. He later commanded the first crewed mission to the Skylab space station in 1973.
