Pedro Duque is a Spanish aeronautical engineer and astronaut who worked for private aerospace companies and the European Space Agency after earning his degree from the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid in 1986. He was selected as an astronaut candidate by the ESA in 1992 and by NASA Astronaut Group 16 in 1996, and flew two spaceflights, as a mission specialist on Space Shuttle mission STS-95 in 1998 and aboard a Soyuz TMA flight to the International Space Station in October 2003 as part of Spain's Mision Cervantes. He later served as Spain's Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities from 2018 to 2021 and represented Alicante in the Congress of Deputies from 2019 to 2020.
