Pavel Popovich was a Soviet cosmonaut who flew the Vostok 4 mission in August 1962, part of the first instance of two crewed spacecraft in orbit simultaneously alongside Vostok 3, passing within a few kilometers of one another in an early demonstration of orbital rendezvous precision. He later commanded a Soyuz mission to the Salyut 3 military space station in 1974, becoming one of the relatively small group of cosmonauts to fly in both the Vostok and Soyuz eras of the Soviet program.
