Pavel Belyayev was a Soviet cosmonaut and Air Force pilot who commanded the Voskhod 2 mission in March 1965, during which crewmate Alexei Leonov performed the first spacewalk in history. The mission encountered serious difficulties on reentry when the automatic landing system failed, forcing Belyayev to manually pilot the descent, resulting in a landing far off course in a remote, snow-covered forest in the Ural Mountains, where the crew waited roughly a day before rescue teams reached them.
