Paolo Nespoli is an Italian astronaut and engineer who served as an officer in the Italian Army before his selection as an astronaut in July 1998 through the Italian Space Agency, joining both the 1998 ESA group and NASA Astronaut Group 17. He flew three spaceflights: Space Shuttle mission STS-120 in 2007 delivering the Harmony module to the International Space Station, a six month mission aboard Soyuz TMA-20 for Expeditions 26 and 27 in 2010 and 2011, and the VITA mission aboard Soyuz MS-05 in 2017 for Expeditions 52 and 53. Across all three spaceflights he accumulated over 313 days in space before retiring in 2019.
