Michel Tognini is a French astronaut, test pilot and Brigadier General in the French Air Force with over 4,000 flight hours across 80 aircraft types. Selected by CNES in its 1985 astronaut recruitment program, he trained as a cosmonaut in the Soviet Union beginning in 1986 and was later selected by NASA in 1994 and by the European Space Agency in 1999. He flew two spaceflights, a 1992 mission to Mir aboard Soyuz TM-15 as part of the Soviet-French Antares mission, and the 1999 Space Shuttle mission STS-93 that deployed the Chandra X-ray Observatory, logging about 19 days in space across both.
