American astronaut, U.S. Air Force officer and test pilot best known as the Command Module Pilot for Apollo 11 in July 1969. While Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the lunar surface, Collins remained alone in orbit piloting the command module Columbia, making him one of the first three humans to travel to the Moon. He later served as NASA's Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs and as director of the National Air and Space Museum.
