Matthias Maurer is a German astronaut and materials scientist who was selected by the European Space Agency in 2015 to join the astronaut corps. He flew his only spaceflight, SpaceX Crew-3, launching November 10, 2021, as a mission specialist alongside NASA astronauts Raja Chari, Thomas Marshburn and Kayla Barron, spending 176 days in space across Expeditions 66 and 67 and conducting one spacewalk. His mission was branded Cosmic Kiss, and he became the twelfth German astronaut to reach orbit, following Alexander Gerst's 2018 mission.
