American engineer, physician and former NASA astronaut. In September 1992 she flew aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour on mission STS-47, becoming the first African-American woman to travel into space, serving as a mission specialist during the eight-day joint US-Japan flight. Since leaving NASA she has founded technology and science-education companies and advocated for STEM education.
