Koichi Wakata is a Japanese engineer and JAXA astronaut who has flown five spaceflights across a career spanning more than two decades, more than any other Japanese astronaut. In 2014 he became the first Japanese citizen to command the International Space Station, leading part of Expedition 39. His missions have included multiple Space Shuttle flights and long-duration stays aboard the space station, spanning both the American Shuttle era and the later Soyuz and commercial crew eras of ISS transport.
