Kate Rubins is an American microbiologist and NASA astronaut who became the first person to sequence DNA in space, using a portable sequencing device during her first long-duration mission to the International Space Station in 2016, a demonstration with implications for detecting illness and studying biology during future deep-space missions. She flew a second long-duration mission in 2020 to 2021 and performed multiple spacewalks across her two flights.
