Jose M. Hernandez is a Mexican-American engineer and former NASA astronaut, the son of migrant farmworkers, who flew aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-128 in 2009, a resupply flight to the International Space Station. Before joining NASA he worked as an engineer developing medical imaging and nuclear nonproliferation technology, and he later pursued a career in California politics and public speaking focused on education and opportunity for children of migrant farmworking families.
