John Young was an American NASA astronaut who flew six spaceflights across four different programs over a career spanning more than two decades, a record breadth of experience among American astronauts. He flew on Gemini 3 and commanded Gemini 10, walked on the Moon as commander of Apollo 16, and commanded the first-ever Space Shuttle flight, STS-1, in 1981. Young was one of only three people to fly to the Moon twice, and he later commanded a second Shuttle mission before retiring from spaceflight.
