Jean-Loup Chretien is a French Air Force pilot who became the first citizen of Western Europe to fly in space, launching aboard a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft in June 1982 to the Salyut 7 space station as part of a bilateral French-Soviet spaceflight agreement. He later flew a second mission to the Mir space station in 1988, during which he performed a spacewalk, and he subsequently trained with NASA and flew a Space Shuttle mission in 1997, becoming the only person to have flown on both Soviet and American launch systems as of that flight.
