Harrison Schmitt is an American geologist and former NASA astronaut who served as lunar module pilot on Apollo 17 in December 1972, the final crewed mission to the Moon in the Apollo program. He is the only professional geologist to have walked on the lunar surface, and his scientific training shaped much of the missions extensive sample collection and field observation on the Moon. After leaving NASA, Schmitt was elected to a single term as a United States Senator representing New Mexico.
