Guion Bluford is an American aerospace engineer, United States Air Force veteran and former NASA astronaut who became the first African American to fly in space, aboard a Space Shuttle Challenger mission in August 1983. He flew a total of four Shuttle missions during his career, one of the most experienced astronauts of the early Shuttle program, before retiring from NASA to work in the aerospace and engineering industry.
