Gregory Jarvis was an American electrical engineer employed by the Hughes Aircraft Company who flew as a payload specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger mission STS-51-L in January 1986, representing his employer rather than NASA as one of the programs early corporate passengers. He had been bumped from two earlier Shuttle flights before finally being assigned a seat on the ill-fated mission. Jarvis was among the seven crew members killed when Challenger broke apart shortly after launch on January 28, 1986.
