Georgy Dobrovolsky was a Soviet cosmonaut who commanded the Soyuz 11 mission in June 1971, which docked with and delivered the first crew to live aboard Salyut 1, the worlds first space station, where they remained for over three weeks conducting scientific work. During the return to Earth, a cabin depressurization caused by a faulty valve killed Dobrovolsky and his two crewmates, Vladislav Volkov and Viktor Patsayev, before their capsule landed, the only fatal spaceflight accident to occur during descent from orbit in the Soviet program.
