Georgi Beregovoi was a Soviet cosmonaut and decorated World War II fighter pilot who commanded the Soyuz 3 mission in October 1968, the first crewed Soviet flight following the fatal Soyuz 1 accident the previous year. The mission attempted a rendezvous and docking with an uncrewed Soyuz 2 spacecraft, which was not fully completed, but the flight was still considered an important step in restoring confidence in the Soyuz spacecraft after the earlier disaster.
