Franz Viehbock is an Austrian engineer who became the first and, to date, only Austrian citizen to fly in space, launching aboard a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft in October 1991 to the Mir space station as part of the Austromir program, a bilateral Austrian-Soviet spaceflight agreement. He spent about eight days in orbit conducting joint Austrian-Soviet scientific experiments before returning to Earth, one of the last Interkosmos-style guest cosmonaut flights of the Soviet era.
