Ellison Onizuka was an American aerospace engineer and United States Air Force officer, the first Asian American and the first person of Japanese descent to fly in space, on a 1985 Space Shuttle Discovery mission. He was selected as a mission specialist for the January 1986 Challenger flight STS-51-L, his second spaceflight. Onizuka was among the seven crew members killed when Challenger broke apart shortly after launch, and he is remembered in Hawaii, his home state, through numerous schools and memorials named after him.
