Retired NASA astronaut and United States Air Force colonel who served as a flight instructor and test pilot before joining NASA. She made history as the first woman to pilot a Space Shuttle, on STS-63 in 1995, and the first woman to command a Space Shuttle mission, STS-93 in 1999, which deployed the Chandra X-ray Observatory.
