Ed White was an American NASA astronaut and United States Air Force officer who performed the first spacewalk by an American, stepping outside his Gemini 4 spacecraft in June 1965 and maneuvering for about twenty minutes using a hand-held gas gun before being ordered back inside. He was later assigned as senior pilot for the first crewed Apollo mission, Apollo 1, and was killed along with crewmates Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee when a fire swept through their command module during a launch pad test in January 1967.
