Dumitru Prunariu is a Romanian aerospace engineer who became the first and, to date, only Romanian citizen to fly in space, launching aboard a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft in May 1981 as part of the Interkosmos program to the Salyut 6 space station. He spent about eight days in orbit conducting joint Soviet-Romanian scientific experiments, and he later held leadership roles in international space cooperation bodies, including serving as chair of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
