Claudie Haignere is a French physician and rheumatologist who became the first French woman to fly in space, launching aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in 1996 to the Mir space station. She flew a second mission to the International Space Station in 2001. After her spaceflight career, Haignere entered French government service, serving as a government minister for research and later for European affairs, and she also held leadership roles at the European Space Agency and French science and culture institutions.
