Claude Nicollier is a Swiss astronaut and the first person from Switzerland to reach space. He was selected by the European Space Agency in July 1978 as a member of the first group of European astronauts and later joined NASA Astronaut Group 9 in 1980 as a mission specialist, becoming the first non-American to become a full-time NASA astronaut. He flew four Space Shuttle missions between 1992 and 1999, including both Hubble Space Telescope servicing missions, STS-61 in 1993 and STS-103 in 1999, and conducted his only spacewalk on the second of those, becoming the first ESA astronaut to perform a spacewalk on a Space Shuttle mission.
