Chiaki Mukai is a Japanese cardiovascular surgeon and JAXA astronaut who became the first Japanese woman to fly in space, aboard a Space Shuttle mission in 1994 carrying a Spacelab life sciences module. She flew a second Shuttle mission in 1998 that also carried Senator John Glenn on his return to space, becoming the first Japanese astronaut to fly twice. Mukai conducted extensive biomedical research during both missions, drawing on her background as a physician.
