Charles Bolden is an American former NASA astronaut and United States Marine Corps major general who flew four Space Shuttle missions, commanding two of them, including the 1990 mission that deployed the Hubble Space Telescope. After retiring from spaceflight he continued his military career before returning to NASA in 2009 as its administrator, a position he held for nearly eight years, becoming the first African American to lead the agency on a permanent basis.
