Boris Volynov was a Soviet cosmonaut who commanded the Soyuz 5 mission in January 1969, part of the first docking of two crewed Soviet spacecraft and the first transfer of crew members between two spacecraft via spacewalk. During reentry, his descent module failed to properly separate from the service module, causing a violent, dangerously hot descent that Volynov survived, later commanding a second mission in 1976 to the Salyut 5 military space station.
