Alexander Gerst is a German volcanologist and European Space Agency astronaut who has flown two long-duration missions to the International Space Station, in 2014 and 2018. On his second mission he became the first German citizen to command the space station, leading Expedition 57. Before joining the astronaut corps, Gerst conducted field research on volcanoes, and he has remained active in public science communication, including extensive photography and social media coverage of his time in orbit.
