Airbus Defence and Space is the military and space systems division of Airbus. It was formed in 2014 during the restructuring of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company, combining the former Airbus Military, Astrium and Cassidian divisions. The division contributed 21 percent of Airbus's revenues in 2016 and is the second largest space company in the world. Plans have been announced to merge the space systems businesses of Airbus, Telespazio and Thales Alenia Space into a new joint venture owned jointly by Airbus, Leonardo and Thales, with an estimated annual turnover of 6.5 billion euros, expected to become operational in 2027 if approved by regulators.
